Legal research is an important part of the practice of law, and lawyers have ethical responsibilities when using technology to do legal research. This program focuses on the research sources and tools available to lawyers in Virginia. While the primary emphasis is on researching Virginia law, this seminar also covers general civil, criminal, and business resources that can be used in legal practice. The use of commercial, government, as well as other free resources is also emphasized.
This 3-hour seminar devotes an hour to discuss a lawyer’s ethical duty under Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 1.1, comment 6, which includes the awareness of the benefits and risks associated with the use of technology. Learn how the duty under Rule 1.1 extends to the technology used to research legal issues.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Joyce Manna Janto, University of Richmond Law School Library / Richmond
Joyce Manna Janto is the Director of Public & Instructional Services at the University of Richmond William Taylor Muse Law Library since August 2020. Prior to this, she served as the Acquisitions Librarian and Associate Director for Collection Development, and Deputy Director at Richmond from 1982-2020. She teaches Legal Research I and II, Virginia Legal Research, Advanced Legal Research and Professional Responsibility.
Ms. Janto holds a BS from Clarion State University of Pennsylvania, an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh, and a JD from the University of Richmond. She is very active professionally, having served as president of the Virginia Association of Law Libraries, the Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries, and the American Association of Law Libraries. She has published extensively in both legal and library-related publications and presented at conferences on the international, national, regional, state, and local levels. Her fields of expertise include management and personnel issues, legal research, and ethics.
