Competence in the drafting of prenuptial agreements, property settlement agreements, and cohabitation agreements requires knowledge of basic aspects of real estate law. In this seminar, a real estate lawyer and a family law practitioner team up to discuss the key aspects of real estate law for family law practitioners.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Larry J. McElwain, Scott Kroner, PLC / Charlottesville

Larry J. McElwain is a graduate of the University of Virginia (1970) and Boston College Law School (1975). He has been in private practice in Charlottesville since 1975. During the first fifteen years of his practice he has split his time between litigation, both civil and criminal, and transactional work; however, for the past several years the bulk of his work has been focused on real property, both transactional and litigation.

Mr. McElwain is a Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL); past chair of the Board of Governors of the Real Property Section of the Virginia State Bar; and past chair of the Real Property Section of the Virginia Bar Association. He has served as program organizer and moderator for several of the annual Advanced Real Estate Seminars for the VSB and Virginia CLE^®; has written several articles pertaining to real property law; and has been a frequent guest lecturer on real property at the University of Virginia Law School, University of Richmond Law School, and George Mason Law School, and for Virginia CLE^®.

Mr. McElwain has been a bank director for close to thirty years, currently serving as chair of BB&T’s Central Virginia Region advisory board and is currently on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville.

Ernest A. Harper, Royer Caramanis / Charlottesville

Ernie Harper was born and raised in Palo Alto, California. Upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1987, he was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Marines for 20 years, in various capacities and all over the world. He earned his J.D. from The George Washington University School of Law in 1994, and served as a judge advocate in the Marine Corps. He retired from military service in 2007, with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Harper practiced law with Tremblay and Smith from 2007 until 2016 and is now a proud partner at Royer Caramanis. He focuses on Family Law (divorce, custody, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, property settlements, separation agreements) as well as Military Law (military justice, command relations, administrative and judicial tribunals, security clearances). He follows the motto: No better friend, no worse enemy. Settlement of a domestic relations case is usually the best course of action, and he works hard to achieve settlement. But in those cases, in which settlement is not possible, trial takes the character of battle.
