This program is designed for solo practitioners and small firms who want to grow their client base without breaking the bank or the rules. Participants will gain an understanding of the rules of professional conduct that govern legal marketing practices. Participants will then learn practical, cost-effective marketing strategies that build credibility and attract the right clients. Through real-world examples, you will discover practical marketing approaches that fit the time and budget constraints of smaller practices.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation/transfer requests will be honored until 5:00 p.m. the day preceding the seminar. You will, however, be charged $40 if you cancel or transfer your registration to a different seminar after the link to the materials has been e-mailed by Virginia CLE®.
Full refunds or transfers are available up to two days after a webcast in the unlikely event that you experience technical difficulties.
MCLE Credit Caveat: The MCLE Board measures credits by the time you spend in attendance. If you enter a seminar late or leave it early, or both, you must reflect those adjustments accurately in the credits you report on your credit reporting form. A code will be given at the end of the seminar, which must be written on your MCLE form.
The seminar has been approved for 1.0 hour of MCLE Ethics credit. In accordance with Virginia MCLE Regulation 103(c)(1), the 2-hour marketing-strategies portion of the program does not carry MCLE credit.

| 10:00 | Ethics of Legal Marketing This session will begin with a brief discussion on the historical context for the development of rules overseeing legal marketing. It will then examine ABA Model Rules 7.1–7.5 and several LEOs and court decisions to ensure that attorneys remain compliant in their marketing practices regarding content, firm marketing, individual lawyer marketing, direct mail, and marketing using electronic communication and the internet. The session will also cover Virginia’s groundbreaking marketing rules. |

Thomas E. Spahn practices as a commercial litigator with McGuireWoods in Tysons, Virginia. He was selected as the 2013 and 2020 metro-Washington, DC “Lawyer of the Year” for “Bet the Company Litigation” by The Best Lawyers in America (Woodward/White, Inc.). He has served on the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility and is a member of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He is a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation. Mr. Spahn has written extensively on attorney-client privilege (including the Virginia CLE® publications The Attorney-Client Privilege and the Work Product Doctrine: A Practitioner’s Guide and A Virginia-Specific Summary Guide: The Attorney-Client Privilege and the Work Product Doctrine), ethics, and other topics, and has spoken at more than 1,400 CLE programs throughout the U.S. and in several foreign countries.
